hope, redemption, growth

"He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end." Ecc 3:11

For those of you who couldn't make my senior art show this past spring or wanted to know more about the meaning of my performance piece, thanks to Andy Lau it's been documented and edited into a video... Please let me know if you have any questions and feel free to share your response. 


The performance consisted of many different elements, inspired by a short autobiography I wrote winter quarter  titled "la vie en rose". I untied my shoes and walked barefoot to my typewriter, writing as a symbol of story telling and self expression. Next I played "la vie en rose on my trumpet"- a song that is associated with memories and France: the meeting of my past and future. Taking scissors I cut pieces of my hair and put them in envelopes around me- hair is tied to identity and time, a giving and sending of myself to others as well as change. Tied my shoes back on and waked away: ready for the present and future, remembering the past. God whispered the words redemption and hope into my heart. The performance was an autobiographical act so to speak of who I was, who I am and who I am becoming- Hope. 


We begin to see life in rose colored lenses when we open our eyes to the beauty even in the rough cut brokenness and pain. We are refined and gain value when we are raw and malleable in spirit.

I had 3 pieces up throughout the week in addition to the performance at the opening reception:

"HOPE": An interactive art piece in which viewers are prompted with the question “what do you hope for?” and can write their responses on the letters. This piece was completed when taken out into Isla Vista and put in public parks. 

"Separation": Sewn together with thread and hair this installation was a personal piece of places that I have considered home, with an empty space sewn in the middle with “hope” inside. We long for a place to call home, we long for heaven. The type writer was used in a performance and eluded to eternity’s story being written with our own. 

"Amazing Grace": A video collaboration with Elaine Kelly. Based on daily ritual, breath, cleansing and prayer. Meditative video on receiving grace each day. (below)
